ECC Hosts Workshop on 3D Concrete Printing and Construction Ethics

Date: Jul 7, 2025

The Ethiopian Construction Works Corporation (ECC) has taken a bold step into the future of construction by organizing an innovative workshop titled “3D Printing and Construction Ethics.” The event brought together leading industry experts, government officials, and construction professionals to explore how cutting-edge technologies like 3D printing can revolutionize Ethiopia’s infrastructure sector while upholding strong ethical standards.

One of the highlights of the workshop was a live demonstration by Dr. Robert Schmid, R&D Developer for 3D ECC & Bauminator at Baumi Group. He introduced participants to the revolutionary Bauminator® system, showcasing its ability to reduce construction timelines, significantly cut material costs, and minimizes environmental impact. His presentation emphasized the role of automation and innovation in building faster, greener, and more cost effective infrastructure.

Eng. Yonas Ayalew, CEO of the Ethiopian Construction Consortium and President of the Ethiopian Association of Civil Engineers, shared ECC’s strategic focus on adopting modern technologies such as 3D printing and Building Information Modeling (BIM). He also introduced the ECC Construction Professionals Development Institute and emphasized the importance of embedding ethical principles in the adoption and implementation of these technologies.

Underscoring the ethical dimension of infrastructure development, Eng. Kazawadi Papias, Managing Director of Task Africa and former President of the Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO), delivered a compelling message on the vital role of ethics and integrity. He noted that without strong ethical foundations, even the most technically sound projects risk failure due to corruption or incompetence. He stressed the need for quality, honesty, fairness, and continuous professional growth to ensure the delivery of ethical and sustainable infrastructure.

Adding to the regulatory perspective, Dr. Mesfin Negewo, Director of the Ethiopian Construction Authority, outlined the institutional reforms and standards being prepared to support the shift toward 3D-printed and tech-enabled buildings. He announced plans to establish new regulatory frameworks to ensure the safety, quality, and accountability of construction projects powered by emerging technologies.

Supported by the Ethiopian Construction Authority and the Project Management Institute of Ethiopia, the workshop reaffirmed the country’s commitment to leading in construction innovation while maintaining a strong focus.
